Special Education

A significant component of the Student Services Department is Abington School District’s Special Education services and offerings. Abington School District is committed to providing students with disabilities an array of programs and services to meet their individual needs. In compliance with the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act and the Pennsylvania School Code, the District provides within its public schools Learning, Emotional, Autistic, Life Skills, Blind and Visually Impaired Support, Deaf and Hard Of Hearing Support, Physical Support, Multiple Disabilities Support, and Speech and Language Support Programs. Every effort is made to serve students at their home schools using an inclusive approach towards instructional delivery. The process includes identification, referral and screening, evaluation, eligibility, Individualized Education Program (IEP)/placement, and triennial reevaluation.

Identification Process and Programs

If a parent or educator believes that a student may have a disability and be in need of special education services, a school psychologist coordinates a process that includes identification, referral and screening, evaluation, eligibility, IEP/placement, and triennial reevaluation. A permission form will be provided for parent/guardian signature, which will list the planned assessments. These steps may include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Gathering information from parents, teachers, and the student

  • Analyzing curriculum-based data

  • Completing classroom observations

  • Administering psychological and educational assessments

  • Conducting a Functional Behavioral Assessment

  • Assisting in the development of an Individualized Education Program (IEP), if appropriate

  • Coordinating re-evaluation and other psychological activities, as needed

In addition, if you are interested in the support of other parents and guardians who have students with individualized needs, the Abington School District Special Education Parent Advisory Council (SEPAC) provides the parent/guardian community the chance to meet and discuss issues relevant to the education of students with disabilities. The group meets several times a year in the Copper Beech Elementary School library.
